Encounter Critical is ... intriguing. The rules can be found here. A while back Jeff, from the terrific Jeff's Gameblog (you should really check it out), had an Easy Peasy EC PC contest. I gave the rules a thorough read-through, and came to the conclusion that the PC generation was complicated and obtuse. Wonderfully so. I also thought "man, there oughtta be some sort of robot to generate these PCs."

Well, now there is! Click here to generate an EC PC in a new window. Beware! Sometimes it takes a loooong time to load. [actually, i think i fixed that, but you never know...] Either wait while it does it's business, or just close the window and start again. I think it's totally de-bugged, but i wouldn't bet my life on that...

Some notes on what i've done:

  • Most everything is straight outta the rules as written. I still haven't added monsters as playable races or multi-class characters. But i'm sure i'll get around to them eventually...
  • The character's class is determined by what he'd (or she'd) be best at, based on the stat rolls. But it's not exclusive - there's always a chance the character will be any class, no matter how bad a choice that turns out to be.
  • As far as mutations are concerned, all the mechanical effects have been applied to the stats and abilities for you. No math for you. I also added a few mutations, most of them are mainly cosmetic. Maybe i'll get around to listing my additions sometime...
  • I also added a few 'useless' items to each character's equipment list. I got the idea from some blog somewhere, but i can't remember where. If this was your idea, lemme know and i'll of course give you credit. Most of the items were things i found in my pockets (or on the dash of my car) with some additional input from my two pre-teen sons...
  • Some of the names generated are nigh-unpronounceable. For the alien races, i find that kind of acceptable, but i'm slowly weeding the bad ones out as i find them. I've freely stolen names from a variety of sources, so you might recognize some thinly-disguised names. You might even see your own name...
  • I haven't figured out a way to implement backgrounds yet, in the meantime you get some sort of quote as a placeholder. Maybe it'll give you an idea about the character's background. Or maybe not.
